Sample E-mail:
Dear friends:
I’m quite excited about an event that I've committed to. The Niagara Try-a-Tri is an opportunity to fundraise for Phoenix Place, which is a Starting Over House for women and children affected by family violence.
I’ve officially entered the Phoenix Flyers Team to support Phoenix Place. On Aug 7th, I will be swimming 375 meters, cycling 10 km and running 2.5 km in order to raise money for Phoenix Place. I need your financial donation in support of this event to help women and children to rebuild their lives. My goal is to raise a minimum of $_______.
Phoenix Place is a safe starting over house where women and children receive the education, support and resources to rebuild their lives and live violence-free. It's a great cause and this event is such that our families can help other families who are starting over.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, Aug 7th at Nelles Beach in Grimsby with an official triathlon start time of 1:30 p.m. If you're really motivated and interested in getting and staying in shape...think of taking on the Try-a-Tri challenge or consider entering a relay team. Imagine, getting in shape and supporting a great cause! If you and your family or want to take on the challenge, please let me know and I can get a registration form out to you.
Donations can be sent to (your name, address). Under the subject/memo line please list Phoenix- (your first initial and last name).

Thanks so much for considering supporting me on the Phoenix Flyers Team. I'm hoping to have all donations into Phoenix Place by June _______.
Thanks again.

Fundraising Ideas.
We have compiled some ideas and suggestions to help get you started.
Ideas to inspire and assist your fundraising efforts!
Create and manage your personal fundraising webpage. Once you have registered for the Phoenix Place Challenge, make sure you create a personal fundraising page. You can customize your story and then send batch emails to family and friends and direct people here to make donations. It really is that easy!
Tell everyone you know and ask them to tell everyone they know. Reach out to as many people as possible and share your remarkable story. Whether it’s by word of mouth, email or a letter, this is worth sharing! The cardinal rule of fundraising is ASK, ASK, ASK! If you don’t ask, people won’t donate. The more people know, the more likely they will contribute to your efforts.
Create your network of supporters. Raising money can be a breeze with the help of your family and friends. Ask a few people to help you brainstorm some ways they can help you fundraise. Know someone who is a gourmet cook, seamstress, jewelry maker? Host a social function that includes a silent auction and include a homemade dinner for two, tailoring or a specially designed necklace. Other fundraisers such as a car wash, 5K fun run, theme party or yard sale won’t be as overwhelming with the help of your friends
Look for local business support. Ask local businesses to donate a portion of proceeds from their sales on a particular day to support your charity. They may also donate goods or services such as certificates, a hotel stay, spa day, etc. for a silent auction. Or they may simply put out a donation canister next to their cash register. Again, ASK, ASK, ASK!
Additional suggestions and fundraising ideas:
| • | Take advantage of your employer’s matching gift program. Ask all of your donors to do the same. |
| • | Have a pool in your office to guess your race time. The person who comes closest to your actual time wins a portion of the pool. |
| • | Hold a benefit party at a local restaurant, bar, or nightclub where the business is willing to donate the cover charge for the evening to your organization. It's a win-win situation since the business benefits from the sales of food and drink. |
| • | Ask auto dealerships to donate $10-25 to your beneficiary every time someone takes a test drive over the course of a day or week. |
| • | Arrange a training ride or run for friends, co-workers and ask for donations from those who participate. |
| • | Tell people why you chose the organization you’re raising money for and share facts of interest. Donors will feel more connected to your cause after hearing your personal story. |
| • | Educate your donors and encourage them to learn more about Phoenix Place by linking them to the website. |
| • | If you send a letter to solicit donations, enclose a self-addressed, stamped return envelope. - Always send a thank you letter upon receipt of a donation. |
| BEGINNER'S GUIDE |
You Don't Need To Be An Athlete To Join Our Team!
You don’t need to be an athlete. Our team members have ranged in age from 14 to 60, including both men and women. Our Phoenix Place Triathlon Team members are looking for a new challenge that offers the opportunity to help Phoenix Place, at the same time reaching new personal goals.
Our swim training begins in March. It doesn’t matter if you’re a non-swimmer, a beginner or experienced, our coaches are prepared to help you be ready for the triathlon.
Bike and run/walk training starts in April/May.
As well as our coaches, we often have sessions with professional triathletes and trainers who come out to offer tips and information for beginners.
You’ll find, with the Phoenix Place Triathlon Team, there is the training and support you require as well as a team that just won’t quit!
Tips for Beginners
This page is designed to help beginner triathletes through their first race. For more complete information, see www.trisportcanada.com and click on Beginners Guide.
Try-a-Tri Race
A Try-a-Tri race consists of the following:
| • | 375 meter swim |
| • | 10 kilometer bike |
| • | 2.5 kilometer run (walk) |
Pre-Race
| • | A try-a-tri race is the perfect introduction race for a beginner no matter what your age or level of ability. |
| • | You will need: swim suit, goggles, (swim cap is provided on race day), shirt and shorts for running, running shoes, bike, bike helmet. |
| • | It doesn’t matter what type of bike you have. Many people will be riding mountain bikes or whatever they have on race day. Make sure your bike is road safe before the big day. Have a qualified person check over your bike. |
Race Day
| 1. | Look for your pre-race email – usually sent out the Thursday before race day. This email is packed with useful information regarding your specific race. | ||||||||||
| 2. | Arrive early! A half hour won’t be enough time to get everything done. Give yourself an hour, even more if you can, so that you won’t be rushed. | ||||||||||
| 3. | After parking, take your bike and gear with you to the transition area (the big, fenced in area with the bike racks) and claim a spot for yourself. Make sure you rack your bike in the right area, if you are not sure, ask someone who looks like they know. | ||||||||||
| 4. | Head to the Phoenix Place Team Registration area for instructions. | ||||||||||
| 5. | Now head to the registration area and pick up your race kit in this order:
|
||||||||||
| 6. | Next you move to the station near the transition area for body marking and timing chip. Your time is electronically monitored when you step on the big orange mats at the finish line. | ||||||||||
| 7. | Pin your race number on your shirt. You have to finish the race with the number on the front of your body. | ||||||||||
| 8. | Organize your gear next to your bike. Locate a fixed landmark or count racks to your bike. | ||||||||||
| 9. | If you are a weak swimmer or a beginner, stay to the back of the pack. |
Common rule violations
| • | unracking your bike before you do up the helmet chin strap or undoing before racking your bike |
| • | mounting your bike before you reach the mount line or dismounting after the same line |
| • | not wearing a race number while on the bike and the run |
| • | altering a race number-you can’t fold or cut it to make it smaller, for example |
| • | not wearing a shirt/top while biking and running(you need to wear a top during both) |
| • | competing while listening to a walkman/MP3player. This is a safety hazard. |
We couldn’t do this without THEM!
Angela Marcy and Dave Harrison are the volunteer coaches who make it possible, for the Phoenix Place Triathlon Team, to make it to the finish line.
Angela Marcy has been a member of every Phoenix Place team since 2003 and right from the first year has been a true competitor. It has become tradition to see her speed by on her bike as she encourages us and gives us the benefit of her experience and training. As coach, Angela is at every training and has the benefit of her six years in the Niagara triathlon and several others across the province as well. Thank you for sharing your training and skills!
Dave Harrison has been both a member and coach for our team. He has competed in 25 marathons, including qualifying and participating in 8 Boston Marathons, has 25 years of triathlon experience at the provincial and national levels. He is a Canfitpro Certified Personal trainer and has Red Cross CPR/AED Level C First Aid Certification. We are excited Dave is sharing his experiences with us.
