I woke up feeling groggy. My head was spinning.

He was real close. He had worry in his eyes. Anger, too.
I could even feel his breath. Hot. Smokey. He was studying
my face and arms. Checking for bruises. Or blood, probably.
Seeing neither, he stiffened and stood up.

“You fell,” he said.

I fell back to sleep when I awoke it was dark.
It was only then I realized I was on the floor. Still.

I’m ashamed to say I didn’t leave him then.
